Objectives:
The project objectives cover three complementary technical areas:
- NTN communications – analysis of promising use cases for the integration of SDN in 5G-NTN scenarios (both 5G NTN standalone and hybrid terrestrial-NTN), supported by the design and development of a scalable and efficient testbed to assess the impact on end-to-end functionalities and performance (e.g. SDN-based routing in satellite constellations, SDN-activated supplementary satellite backhauling links).
- 5G – integration of 5G and NTN with SDN as enabling technology, considering 5G NTN constellations with SDN capability for efficient and service-driven routing towards the 5G Core, and hybrid 5G terrestrial-satellite backhauling with service policies controlled through SDN, enforcing resource allocation and multi-tenancy in the NTN domain.
- Security – identification of DDoS attacks leveraging the target SDN deployment on the selected scenarios and definition of SDN-based countermeasures. The attacks are reproduced in the developed testbed, which acts as a cyber range tailored for training, demonstration and experimentation activities.
These objectives lead to the development of a testbed based on virtualisation technologies aimed at testing SDN-based solutions in 5G NTN scenarios, targeting TRL 5.
Current status:
The project kicked off on 2 September 2025.
