Objectives:
The Wave Telecontrol Unit (WTU), defined and developed as part of this project, represents a fully automatic satellite communication subsystem, both hardware and software, designed for LEO satellites. It is reusable and modular. Specifically, for the purposes of the proposed verification and validation activities, RomARS will develop a sensor data acquisition and transfer module using IoT LoRa technology. This module will be designed and validated to ensure its extensibility and applicability to other technologies, such as 5G IoT.
The main objectives of the project are:
-
- Define the payload for CubeSats (WTU) capable of acquiring data from sensors distributed across the territory, storing it, and retransmitting it to the ground using conventional communication channels towards the ground station.
- Define and develop a flexible and “5G-ready” module for satellite-based IoT, integrated within the WTU subsystem.
- Create a laboratory testing environment to validate the correct operation of both the hardware (HW) and software (SW). developed.
Romars’ role
In this project, RomARS is in charge to the:
-
- State of the Art of Satellite payload for IoT, of available technology on equipment, interfaces and integration.
- Modeling of communication component (LoRa and IoT).
- Test plan definition.
- Support to integration and test activities.
Status of the project
The Kick-Off meeting took place on 1 October 2025.
