Expertise in TCP/IP protocols and network management on the Linux operating system enabled the development of a real-time emulation platform, allowing experimentation with real applications and protocol stacks, as well as immediate integration with real data networks and commercial hardware.
It is possible to design and test broadband services (e.g., telemedicine), VoIP, and live IP streaming (H.265) via satellite, enabling convergence between innovative protocols and established network technologies and architectures.

We have acquired the ability to develop and configure network software simulators, primarily based on NS-2 and NS-3.
Several simulated communication environments have been created and used to evaluate performance across the entire TCP/IP protocol stack: the MAC layer of DVB-RCS/RDS2 satellite, DAMA algorithms, IP and QoS mobility managers, optimization of the TCP transport layer (Noordwijk TCP, TCP Wave, PEPs/accelerators), IoT traffic generators (MQTT and HTTP), DASH video streaming, to name just a few examples.

Thanks to high-speed connectivity and a certain number of available public IP addresses, we have the capability to host testbeds, virtual machines, and network devices that require 24/7 availability. The testbeds for the SHINE and VIBES projects are examples of equipment fully hosted in our laboratory and accessible remotely.

The available real systems include a Tooway transceiver station pointed at the KaSAT satellite, used for network dimensioning for broadband satellite services, the implementation of the TCP Wave protocol on Linux for performance verification and comparison of TCP protocols, and the COMBO Box, a hybrid satellite-terrestrial system (ADSL).

OUR ACTIVITY

Our laboratory consists of various components (hardware and software equipment) which, when properly integrated, provide substantial support for research, design, and development activities.

Additionally, we have access to a variety of laboratory equipment, including high-performance workstations, pre-installed virtual environments (bare-metal hypervisors, virtual machines, OpenStack), network devices and switches, development environments, and broadband connectivity through high-speed networks.

Laboratory activities are also conducted in collaboration with industrial and academic partners, integrating, when necessary, additional simulation and emulation components as well as COTS equipment to support a wide range of project and innovation activities.
