{"id":60099,"date":"2017-02-01T16:54:15","date_gmt":"2017-02-01T15:54:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/romars.tech\/project\/shine-2\/"},"modified":"2025-06-12T17:07:35","modified_gmt":"2025-06-12T15:07:35","slug":"shine","status":"publish","type":"dt_portfolio","link":"https:\/\/romars.tech\/en\/project\/shine\/","title":{"rendered":"SHINE"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-60067 alignright\" src=\"https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/photo-output-1-1-300x300-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/photo-output-1-1-300x300-1.jpg 300w, https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/photo-output-1-1-300x300-1-150x150.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #890521;\"><strong>Objectives:<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>SHINE is focused around the design and implementation of an end-to-end secure infrastructure for the delivery of multimedia content over integrated satellite-terrestrial networks.<\/p>\n<p>The overall security architecture of the SHINE project is comprised of two main building blocks:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ol>\n<li>A satellite-enabled broadcast distribution backbone leveraging network;<\/li>\n<li>A MPEG-DASH\/WebRTC-enabled edge distribution network.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>In-between such building blocks lies a middle layer associated with the secure storage of cached multimedia content chunks.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59443\" src=\"https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Shineobj-770x450-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"770\" height=\"450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Shineobj-770x450-1.png 770w, https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Shineobj-770x450-1-300x175.png 300w, https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/Shineobj-770x450-1-768x449.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #890521;\"><strong>Challenges<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The challenges of the SHINE project are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>Define an end-to-end security architecture for hybrid satellite-terrestrial networks allowing for the effective transmission of multimedia content;<\/li>\n<li>Study the applicability of Network Coding techniques to real-world application scenarios;<\/li>\n<li>Evaluate the effectiveness of the upcoming WebRTC (Web Real Time Communications) standard when applied to the streaming of multimedia content;<\/li>\n<li>Perform a comparative analysis between MPEG-DASH and WebRTC, taking into account both performance and security features.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #890521;\"><strong>Benefits<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The project SHINE designs innovative mechanisms for the protection from unauthorized access to content-related data, as well as for the secure distribution of real-time multimedia information across hybrid channels leveraging both the unicast and the multicast communication paradigm. With respect to this last point, we propose a novel \u201ccombined coding\u201d technique targeting the optimization of multicast-enabled transmissions in the presence of caching. More precisely, we leverage cutting-edge solutions for decentralized random caching which, combined with an original content distribution technique based on coded multicast, allows us to attain \u201corder-optimal\u201d performance.<\/p>\n<p>Bearing in mind the articulated structure of the overall content distribution network, which comprises both the satellite-enabled broadcasting trunks (allowing to properly populate edge caches) and the last-mile access networks, we also look after secure, privacy-enhanced, adaptive delivery to the end-users of the contents stored inside edge caches. For this last part we leverage (and improve) state-of-the art solutions coming from the most prominent standardization communities in the field of real-time communications in the Internet.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #890521;\"><strong>Features<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>Within the former part of the network, we rely on network coding in order to define a coded multicast technique allowing us to improve both performance and security of communications. At the edges of the distribution network, which also act as in-network caches, we instead leverage cutting-edge streaming technologies (namely, MPEG-DASH and\/or WebRTC) in order to optimize content distribution towards the end users of the network, and we look after both performance and security.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #890521;\"><strong>System Architecture<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>SHINE\u2019s architecture is reported in the picture below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p align=\"left\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"font-family: Liberation Serif, serif;\"><span style=\"font-size: medium;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-59445\" src=\"https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ShineSA-776x633-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"776\" height=\"633\" srcset=\"https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ShineSA-776x633-1.png 776w, https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ShineSA-776x633-1-300x245.png 300w, https:\/\/romars.tech\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/ShineSA-776x633-1-768x626.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 776px) 100vw, 776px\" \/><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The picture highlights the main logical components of the architecture:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"list-style-type: none;\">\n<ul>\n<li>A source encoder block;<\/li>\n<li>The core satellite-enabled communication infrastructure;<\/li>\n<li>Two different \u201cflavours\u201d of edge access networks (WebRTC-enabled access network, an MPEG-DASH enabled access network).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"text-decoration: underline; color: #890521;\"><strong>Plan<\/strong><\/span><\/h4>\n<p>The project starts by identifying the main usage scenarios, we then move to the specification of the overall architecture for the secure delivery of multimedia content in a hybrid satellite-terrestrial network environment.
